#6 Get some credit for being fiscally awesome

So, say you are like me and wanted nothing to do with credit cards. I understand. I’m with you. I get you. I have always been under the general notion that you should not buy things that you do not have money for.

Unfortunately, the rest of the world doesn’t get us and wants to force us to prove we are responsible. I KNOW RIGHT?!? And as much as you want to pretend like you won’t need credit, even those of you who are poor like me will need it eventually. Even if you don’t need a car loan or a mortgage, renters need credit too. I’m not even talking about the actual rent here. Utility companies will make you pay deposits if you don’t have credit. For my own personal sob story, I had to pay my electric company $300 to start an account with them. There goes lunch for the next two months. Wouldn’t that be a sweet chunk of change to have in your pocket and not in utility company limbo?

Credit cards are tempting and scary. There’s all that credit limit there at your disposal, but don’t fear the plastic. Make it your bitch. Even just sticking with things that you have to buy anyway like food, gas, and textbooks (for you students out there) can help you stay on budget and build credit too.

If you do get a credit card, please, please, please, do your research. Don’t just get one because you got an application in the mail or saw an ad online. There’s interest rates to think about and rewards to cash in on (miles, cash, points for stuff). Plus, some credit card companies could be more or less available depending on your area. #5 Constantly update your resume

Resumes are a pain to say the least. You try to fit the importance of your life onto a single sheet of paper, when all you really want to do is scribble “I’M AWESOME!” across the page and hope they believe it. Heck, I would.

However, we both know that you can’t do that. (Well, you could, but it wouldn’t work.) First, my advice would be to get a solid resume design. Use your space wisely and cut out unimportant words. Be specific with the stuff you did. There are plenty of websites to help, career services at universities, and a heck of a lot of writers who make a pretty penny preying on the unsuspecting and desperate. You really can do it on your own though. The internet is a fabulous thing with not only multiple templates, but tips to get you there.

The real advice here? Continue adding to your resume as your experience grows. If you have one draft where you add everything down to those few months you were a bartender, you can pick and choose based on the job you are applying for. A little copy and pasting action and VIOLA! You can arrange your experience for the job you want. More importantly, you don’t have to scramble to come up with something, and you can easily send it out at your leisure.

#4 Never underestimate independence

Here’s the key, you don’t have to be an alone feminazi, sitting in the corner eating your weight in calories because you are just so independent and are getting back at the man…by turning yourself into a moping blob. Being independent doesn’t mean you have to shun relationships with friends, family, or a significant other. BUT always be capable of going it alone.

I’m not saying you need to be alone. Reliance is a twisted thing though. Sometimes people don’t always look after you the way they should, and you need to be able to pick yourself up. Don’t underestimate being able to support yourself financially and emotionally. One minute you’re happily married, and the next you are a divorcee looking for a job in a very cruel economy. Most people want other people in their lives. We’re human beings, an innately social creature, but this is not the same thing as needing other people.

Being capable of independence does not mean you have to use it. I’d suggest doing what you need to do, so you could go it alone. Whether that’s getting more education, building confidence in yourself, getting in better shape, or something else entirely is for you to decide.

By all means though, embrace the love.

#3 Feel up your breasts

There is no reason not to look for lumps in your breasts. I am not saying you necessarily have to do it everyday, but if you shoot for everyday, you could probably hit at least once a week or even once a month. It’s not like you are doing a whole heck of a lot while you are in the shower anyway (or are you, you naughty girl?), and you might as well do a self check while you are lathering up or taking those oh-so-awesome few minutes of reveling in the incredible warmth of your shower.

You can even have someone else do it. Sure, there’s your gynecologist, but I hear boyfriends are pretty keen on breasts too. He’s probably more familiar with them than you are. And don’t use the “I don’t know what I’m looking for argument” either, friend. Been there, done that. Sometimes there is that whole “is it muscle or is it a lump” debate, but comparing one breast to the other can help you figure the whole situation out. For some reason in American society, masturbation is the beaten orphan child of sexuality. Neglected, abandoned, and all around mistreated, masturbation, especially for girls, is a naughty thing that no wants to bring up. This works as a triple whammy negative for everyone involved. Let us review.

Teenage girls? I leave you with this time honored advice, passed to me by a bathroom stall door, “Sex can wait, masturbate.” Imagine being sixteen, horny as hell, and having your health teacher screaming about abstinence. Girls tell me that they aren’t like other girls. They like to wear their hair up, or they can speak easier with guys than girls. Some say they just aren’t that feminine.

This makes me want to shake them violently. Girls get caught up in what a girl should be rather than just recognizing it as a part of their identity. You decide what a girl is or isn’t to you. You decide what you want you to be. It isn’t painted nails and dresses unless that’s what you want it to be that.

Don’t get caught up in societal expectations when it is hard enough trying to figure out who you are as a person. A girl is you…if you are or choose to be a girl. Own it. Flaunt it. Love it.
